A Guy Called Gerald has been confirmed to play LIVE IN SESSION at MUTEK on June 2nd, 2012 in Montreal.

He will join Jeff Mills, Shackleton, Minilogue Vs Mathew Johnson, Nicholas Jaar, Monolake + more for the 3 Day International Festival of Digital Creativity and Electronic Arts.

Resident Advisor invited A Guy Called Gerald to make their RA:303 Podcast in honour of the Roland 303 Drum Machine.

So we had a neat idea: why not theme RA.303 on Roland’s seminal TB-303 synth, the sound of acid house? In order to execute this ingenious plan we turned to Gerald Simpson, undoubtedly the UK’s most revered proponent of the sound. This is largely thanks to a 1988 number named “Voodoo Ray,” which we guess you may have heard before. Gerald was also a founding member of 808 State, who themselves (or perhaps Gerald solo, but that’s another story) wrote an all-time classic in “Pacific State.” You may have also heard of jungle. Well, Gerald had a rather large hand in birthing the genre through his early works on his own Juice Box Records. The ensuing years saw the Manchester-born artist continue to innovate, releasing seminal full-lengths and restlessly pushing his sound in a forward direction. These days you can find Gerald residing in Berlin, working on his “gangsta tech” project, although we’ll leave him to explain that one.

On a basic level RA.303 comprises a stack of vintage acid house from Gerald’s collection, but he’s inviting us to guess whether the additional acid sounds that colour the mix come from a TB-303, an emulation, or perhaps both.

What have you been up to recently?

Working on a new type of techno called “gangsta tech.” The unique thing about gangsta tech is that it can only be performed live—the only way to really hear it is through a big soundsystem.

How and where was the mix recorded?

In my studio in March.

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

Well, it was the 303rd podcast and RA asked me to give it [a 303-themed mix] a go. I started to dig through the crates until I got back to the beginning. What better place to start than the very first tracks from Chicago?

Do you remember when you first heard the TB-303?

Yeah, it was a track by Newcleus in 1983 called “Jam On It.”

And when did you first utilize one yourself?

When it first came out there was a music shop in Manchester selling it together with the 606. I used to go down to this shop every Saturday to try out all the new equipment.

Does the acid sound still have scope for exploration do you think?

Not for me, only because I’m sticking to my old school doctrine from the beginning, 30 years ago. I’m always looking for creative ways to use the latest equipment. But…I have no problem in helping people reminisce.

What are you up to next?

I’m writing new material constantly to play in my live show which means I’m striving for perfection in the realms of the gangsta tech. It’s not the kind of music for American sell-out rappers who decided to get into cheesy ’90s dance music, two decades too late. This is the real deal. This is as black as it gets.

Fascinated by the “creative energy” and “cultural freedom” in the digital space, ZOE.LEELA released her debut EP, “Queendom Come,” on Cologne’s Rec72.net netlabel in 2009. The EP was available for free under a Creative Commons license and enjoyed a wide audience quickly. The public interest was aroused and so the Kreuzberger and the media started to dance.

Two years later, with the help of the renowned MOTOR Entertainment, she releases her debut album, DIGITAL GUILT.

With the same freedoms of a innovative label, the album is available this time both as a traditional physical product and under Creative Commons license for download. Overall, DIGITAL GUILT presents great complexity. Powerful drum & bass, driving grooves, jazz, rags, dub fragments, sweeping melodies and always a very personal, poignant voice to make the music stir.

The Jungle Drummer is a unique live performer with ten years of experience playing with the biggest live acts in turntablism, hip-hop, electronica and drum and bass.

An integral part of the drum and bass scene’s groundbreaking live act London Elektricity, he provided the beats for over three years for one of the most influential live acts in dance music history, selling out venues across the globe with their critically acclaimed, award winning (BBC 1xtra Best Live Act etc.) live shows.

When the band ended in 2005 Jungle Drummer set out to make his own mark on the scene with his own project with then unknown DJ Fu. Drawing from previous experience working with numerous DJs, Jungle created a unique live project incorporating multiple styles and genres. From its humble beginnings, the show evolved to new heights of live performance, combining the best assets of both artists for a totally unique musical experience. It wasn’t long before the show generated a buzz on the underground circuit from Europe to the US through word of mouth alone.

Most recently at work in the studio with the mighty DJ Vapour, Jungle drummed on two tracks on Vapour’s current ‘Legacy’ album, including one (‘A Taste of Things to Come’) built exclusively around his rhythms and beats. Their studio collaboration has also taken to the road in the form of DJ Vapour Live – The Legacy Album Tour.

Vapour’s 36 hertz label is also releasing Jungle’s first solo album project, set to feature numerous guest artist collaborations and backed by a full live show including vocalists, musicians, producers, DJs and beatboxers. Coming from a traditionally live music background, Jungle Drummer’s unique approach to musical composition and production and performance of electronic music looks set to create a musical one-off. Working together with artists in the studio and overseeing the composition and live project will enable him to showcase his musical style and drumming ability as never before.

The Drummer vs. the DJ show format also promises to reach new heights with JFB taking to the helm behind the decks for mind-blowing drum and scratch battles and genre-mashing live remixing of exclusive new tracks and classics from a variety of styles including dubstep, D&B, jungle, hip-hop, rock and more.
