Intuitive artistic expression and intimate musical illustration; Dirk Leyers is a producer, DJ and collaborator who has been at the forefront of pioneering electronic music for over a decade. Initially it was the seminal Closer Musik in conjunction with Matias Aguayo that provided the stage for his creative juices to flow, producing such iconic tracks as One, Two, Three (No Gravity) and Maria. Dirk then went on to firmly established his solo brand as a source of wholesome electronic sounds with releases on Kompact, Klang Electronik and further continued collaborations with the likes of Justus Köhncke and particularly Nerk, with whom he has had multiple releases on Klang, as well as a ground breaking and futuristic Live Act that has taken them to foremost clubs such as Panorama Bar in Berlin.
A keen intrigue with instruments from an early age forged a musical vigor inside Dirk, which really began to articulate after moving to Cologne in the late 90s and meeting Matias Aguayo, with whom he would form Closer Musik. Those few years imaginative years at the start of the new millennium, which produced the album After Love on Kompact, still resonate today; to call the music pioneering is only the half of it…..it was truly inspirational.
Going solo back in Berlin, Dirk began a new wave of experimental and intelligent electronica, with his own Wellen EP and a combination with Justus Köhncke – under the moniker Kontrast – both having well-received releases on Kompact. The impact of living in Berlin was rationalized by Dirk; “For me music is a very personal thing. I am a part of the city I am living in and my music reflects the way I feel. In my opinion everybody should find their own wave and surf it.
This wave also saw Dirk become very much in-demand as a remixer, including putting his definitive musical wisdom into works by Eric D Clark, Andre Kraml, Khan and Alter Ego. There was also for expression in other forms of art too, including as composer for the radio play ‘Auressio’, which was broadcast by the Bayerische Rundfunk (BR2) in February 2010.
By 2006, his partnership with Nerk saw Dirk enter in the most fruitful stage of his productive output with a series of EPs and single releases under the Nerk & Dirk Leyers (NDL) brand, including on Kompakt, V-Records Berlin and most recently on Klang Electronik. Moreover, Nerk and Dirk have become a choice live act guaranteed to move the dance floor, physically and emotionally.
As Dirk says “the political situation, emotions, visions, dreams and everything else that is an influence in my life, these are the tools I use to express myself”.
Expression and talent will always find a way and for Dirk Leyers that way has become his pattern of life. A pattern that has seen not just the boundaries changing, but being revolutionized by an aural consciousness of what is possible through the art of electronic music. You will be inspired!
